Why are we not surprised Grimes' son with Elon Musk doesn't call her mum?

Grimes has revealed her son calls her by her first name and we’re not all that sure we should be surprised someone with the name of X Æ A-Xii would do that.

In May last year the singer and her partner, Elon Musk, welcomed the baby boy and hit the headlines for weeks with the peculiar name they’d given him.

It seems the quirky facts keep on coming though, as Grimes – whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher – revealed the pair’s 16-month-old son, to borrow a phrase, calls her by her name.

In a video with Vogue ahead of this week’s Met Gala, Grimes, who wore a Dune-inspired Iris van Herpen outfit on the carpet, shared her journey as a mum and admitted she doesn’t ‘identify’ with the word.

She said: ‘I think having a baby was a big rebirth for me, like artistically.

‘Being a mother—feels weird to say. For some reason, I don’t identify with that word.’

However, both Grimes and Elon were forthcoming with how to pronounce the baby’s name, despite it being a little different in the early days.

During an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast the week of X’s birth, the Tesla CEO said: ‘First of all, my partner is the one who actually mostly came up with the name. She’s great at names.’

The billionaire then explained: ‘It’s just the letter X and then the Æ is pronounced “Ash”. A-12 is my contribution…. Coolest plane ever. It’s pretty great.’

Further explaining the origin of her son’s name, Grimes had detailed: ‘X, the unknown variable. Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence) A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent.’
