It gives the right to have opinions, and lets us voice them to the whole world. However, as with all things, the internet can also be a cesspit of shit, often to the point of being hateful and mean. In this episode, we take a close look at how the internet got to where it is, and how it can have a positive force in the future, rather than the shit that is currently going on. Twitter is a really great tool for connecting with other people. Not long after the GamerGate story broke, Twitter was inundated with an avalanche of vicious abuse against the people involved. Then, Twitter was accused of being a haven for Nazi supporters and racists in particular. But Twitter has done nothing in response, and the people that have been doing this abuse have done nothing in response either. This is because people use Twitter with the understanding that theyre not actually going to get caught. When a lot of people heard about this, many thought it was ridiculous that Twitter would allow for this level of abuse, so the idea of a troll account began to gain some ground. However, these accounts are not true trolls, in the sense that theyre not really trolling, theyre just spreading misinformation. A troll is defined as someone who intentionally undermines a persons reputation with false information, only for the intention of causing annoyance or being petty. Then, the trolls often say something outrageous to try to make other people angry and bring out their frustration, and when they get what they want, they delete their account or make a new one thats a little more sympathetic. These troll accounts do this, theyre trolling, but theyre not doing it for any other reason than to cause annoyance. What this means is that, these accounts are not actual trolls and they shouldnt be taken seriously. Unfortunately, the way social media has become, people actually take their trolling seriously, and when theyre given the freedom to spread information to people who might actually believe it, people will abuse that freedom in the name of free speech, and its actually done a lot more harm than its done good. When one of these troll accounts says Im going to kill you all theyre actually saying that theyre going to do it in real life. Theyre not just spreading a rumor that somebody said kill all men.
