Png You dont want to see this image againYou dont want to see this image again. You close your eyes and breathe slowly. You are not going to be put down because of an image. A black and white photo of an old woman with a hat. You are not going to be put down because of a stereotype, at least not while you are young and a girl. You have been too long ignoring your own self. You have been too long ignoring your own existence. You know that you have not lived until you have died. You know that you have not lived until you have had that last taste of death. You remember the first time you laid eyes on yourself in the mirror. You remember being awed by the image of yourself at twelve. It was the first time you had seen yourself as anything other than what you had been taught to see. You remembered every detail: the scars, the eyes, the nose, the teeth. But then, you had been taught how to see yourself in a mirror. You were taught that you are a girl with breasts, a belly, a mouth, and a long, thick hair flowing down to her waist. The truth was, you were just a black girl with black boobs, a black belly, a black mouth, and a dark, curly hair that fell to her waist; you were just a black girl with black hair, a black nose, and a dark, curly hair that fell to her waist. Your life, your sexuality, your body. You remember the way the sun reflected off the lake. You remember the way the cold wind blew. You remember all of it, but you knew that you had never actually been yourself. You had only been another image of the image of yourself. Your life had always been something else, a different image, one that looked different from the other. Your life had always been a shadow on the image of yourself and you knew it. You remembered the first time you laid eyes on yourself in the mirror.
