The Great British Bake Off winner John Whaite, 32, revealed in his Instagram Story today that he had been “kicked in the head” whilst rehearsing the Charleston with his professional partner Johannes Radebe, 34. John shared news of his injury with his 189,000 Instagram followers ahead of tomorrow night’s Strictly live show.

The baking professional posted a video where he can be seen lifting his cap to reveal a painful-looking bruise on the right hand side of his forehead.

He captioned the video: “Got kicked in the head during rehearsals.

“The Charleston is a very dangerous dance.”

John and Johannes have so far not shied away from executing some complex moves on the dance floor, wowing the judges week after week with their stunning choreography.

This week, Strictly’s first same-sex male couple will be taking on the Charleston set to Milord by famous French chanteuse Édith Piaf.

The Charleston is a popular dance from the jazz scene of the Roaring ’20s characterised by its toes-in, heels-out twisting steps.

The dance also features some kicks, which is perhaps how John’s injury during rehearsals occurred.

John also shared a snap to his Story a few hours earlier, which showed Johannes lifting him high into the air as he spread his legs balletically, which means the pair might also have a few lifts in store.

Across the photo, he wrote: “Tune in Saturday night for an explanation.

“I’ll need one myself to be honest…”

The star also shared a video of himself and Johannes practicing some classic Charleston moves, as he playfully sang along with his own lyrics.

“Lots of jelly sweets, and I might need something to eat and maybe 10 coffees…” he joked.

Meanwhile, John posted sweet pictures of himself and fiancé Paul Atkins, including a mirror selfie of them both.

He also posted a throwback snap of the couple looking very young and dapper as they clapped for the dancers from the Strictly audience.

“9 years ago (today I think) Paul and I were in the Strictly audience,” he shared.

“Who’d have thunk it?” (sic)

John has been in a relationship with graphic designer Paul for over a decade, after first meeting on Facebook back in 2008.

Four years on, John became a household name when he won series three of The Great British Bake Off, which launched his now very successful culinary career.

Last week, John and Johannes performed an American Smooth that placed them in the middle of the leaderboard with 29 points.

The couple to beat is currently Dragon’s Den entrepreneur Sara Davies, 37, and professional dance partner Aljaž Škorjanec, who scored 36 points with their Tango to Por Una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel.
