Simon Reeve, 44, has journeyed around the world fronting travel shows for the BBC, and his experiences overseas has led him to make some peculiar purchases. The London-born presenter has now dished on his favourite souvenir, which he bought while in Somalia.

The best-selling author and TV presenter has well-documented his travels to far-flung locations including Australia, Cuba and the Caribbean.

Simon has spoken candidly about his time in Somalia where he visited a market and bought a passport from a street vendor.

Addressing items he brings back home to the UK from his travels, the small-screen star shared the bizarre moment he experienced.

“I’m not very classy so I’ve stopped bringing back snowglobes and things like that,” Simon explained.

He continued: “My favourite souvenir is a Somalian diplomatic passport which is in my own name with my photograph in it.

“I bought it for $80 from a man called Mr Big Beard in Mogadishu market.”

Simon joked: “I mean that is a solid souvenir. It’s expired now so sadly I can’t use it anymore.”

The father-of-one also dished on the weird and wonderful cuisines he has tried, and sometimes endured, while filming abroad.

The small-screen star explained he has eaten some “weird stuff” during his travels, but one that plays heavily on his mind was during a trip to South Asia.

“We were crossing the mountains in Laos, and we stopped in a cafe by the side of the road,” Simon explained.

“The guys we were with were completely knackered.”

He continued: “One of them ordered a plate of food and out came this steaming spinach.

“Or at least that’s what I thought it was.”

Simon was left taken aback after he was told that he had been offered a bowl of buffalo faeces.

He exclaimed: “Buffalo poo for goodness sake! What on earth is going on on this planet?”

Meanwhile, the TV adventurer returned to screens last month with Incredible Journeys on BBC Two, which takes a look back at some of the most remote destinations he has visited.

They included the forests of Borneo and the deserts of central Asia.

The explorer will feature in another series tonight as the channel revisits his time travelling the length of North and South America.

The expedition begins in Alaska, journeying south through Canada to the border with the US.

The Americas with Simon Reeve airs tonight on BBC Two at 6pm.
