Piers Morgan, 57, like many, was shocked at new footage that emerged of two men harassing Professor Chris Whitty, labelling them “disgusting”. England’s chief medical officer could be seen being grappled by the males who were filming the incident, grinning at the camera while the medic attempted to flee. While he manages to step away, the men hold onto him again as he crosses a road.

Near the end of the short clip, someone who appears to be a passer-by can be heard telling the men to “leave this gentleman alone”.

Taking to Twitter after the video was shared, hundreds of people condemned their actions, branding them “thugs” for manhandling the medic that way.

Piers’ thoughts rang loud and clear as he penned: “Disgusting.”

Fans rushed to the comments section to share their views, with one saying: “This is horrendous. Not harassing, physical assault.”

Another agreed: “F***ing shocking that is, look at the fear in his face.”

“This is so so wrong…that poor man. Nobody deserves to be harassed and intimidated like this,” said a third.

Others however, weren’t so sure what the men did wrong, questioning alt those who condemned their actions while describing it as just “playful banter”.

It is not clear when the incident took place, but in a statement the Metropolitan Police said: “We’re aware of a video being shared online showing an incident in St James’s Park.

“Officers spoke to all those involved at the time and their details were taken.

“We are in contact with the victim and the circumstances continue to be investigated.”

The video also caught the attention of other high-profile individuals, such as Good Morning Britain’s Adil Ray, who pleaded with Boris Johnson to provide Mr Whitty with extra security.

He wrote: “This is an utterly disgusting way to treat a person who has devoted his time to save our lives. These complete and utter imbeciles must be found and dealt with. Meanwhile @BorisJohnson please provide Chris Whitty with security.”

Former footballer Stan Collymore said: “Feel for Chris Whitty. Absolute feral f***ing dogs.”

Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi, who tweeted: “This is disgusting and these thugs must be found and charged.

“Zero tolerance for harassing a public servant.”

It comes after Prof Whitty was accosted back in February, when a TikTok user approached him while he was queuing at a food stall in London.

The youth yelled: “Liar. You’re a liar. Mandem, he’s a liar… You’re a liar.

“You lie about the COVID-19 cases. Stop lying to the TV, man.”

The scientist did not react and later told a Downing Street briefing that the “odd young lad” was “showing off”.

He said he “didn’t think anything of it, frankly”, adding: “I’m sure he’ll become a model citizen in due course and hopefully more like Captain Tom, who is the kind of person who I think much more exemplifies the spirit of the UK.”
