Love Islands Kai left heartbroken just days before getting ITV call to join show

Love Island star Kai Fagan has fast become one of the most popular boys in the villa since the show kicked off last week – and his best pal Luke isn’t surprised.

The PE teacher had the girls swooning as soon as they saw him but, despite appearances, this lad is far from a player.

In fact, best pal Luke Salisbury tells OK! that just days before Love Island signed Kai up, he was mending a broken heart after a girl he liked rejected him.

“Kai was seeing a really lovely girl that he really liked last summer,” 24-year-old barber Luke explains. “They’d been almost-together for around six months, seeing each other day in and day out and he took her on a weekend away in August. He was really into her.

“He’d spent loads of money to treat her. While they were away, he asked her ‘What are we?’, but she told him she wasn’t actually looking for anything serious. He felt like he’d been wasting his time.”

But the prospect of ‘one door closing and another one opening’ was exactly what happened for the 24-year-old Mancunian hunk, who Luke claims had been receiving countless messages from ITV producers encouraging him to apply.

“The day after his ‘thing’ ended with this girl, he thought, ‘Sack it, why not?’ and did it [applied],” Luke – who has known Kai since the pair met in sixth form – says. “The next morning, an ITV recruiter called him and told him they wanted him. That’s how it all kicked off. It was perfect timing for him.”

And it seems as though Kai’s decision to take a break from teaching in the hope of being swept off his feet is already paying off.

Just minutes after walking into the breath-taking South African villa, 6ft 4in Kai quickly caught the attention of payroll administrator Anna-May Robey, ring-girl Olivia Hawkins, 27, and hair stylist Tanyel Revan, who all battled it out to be coupled up with him.

And student Tanya Manhenga, 22, has notched up an impressive four snogs with Kai across three challenges during the opening week.

The first episode also featured Kai telling viewers, “I believe in playing the field because you’ve got to find out which one is the right one. There’s no point just settling for anybody!”

And though he may feel he has the pick of potential partners now, Luke insists Kai is a “loyal lad” and claims he’d be surprised if his pal’s head turns when he’s in an established couple – “unless it was for someone really special”.

“Even when he’s just seeing someone casually, he wouldn’t bat an eyelid at another girl,” Luke says. “He’s definitely a relationship person – he’s been in love twice. His longest relationship was around two years while he was at university, so he’d be buzzing to leave the villa with a girlfriend.

“Obviously, he’s a good-looking bloke,” Luke adds. “I go on nights out with him and he does very well with girls. They’re always staring at him – I think it’s because of his height, they’re always looking up! He gets a tap on the shoulder on every night out.”

Despite almost half the girls in the villa already having the hots for Kai, Luke believes his pal’s loyalty extends beyond romantic connections. “If someone tries to take his girl, he’s not going to fight the other guy,” Luke says.

“He’d rather speak to the girl herself to find out where he stands. Kai isn’t someone to start beef and I can’t see him actively stealing another lad’s girl. He’s such a chilled out person – I think it’s the teacher in him.”

On top of hoping to bring a girl home to meet his mum – who Luke claims is his “best friend and biggest supporter” – Kai would love to walk away with half of the £50,000 cash prize, having wholesome plans in mind for the money.

“His dream is to have his own house,” Luke says. “That’s always been a huge priority for him. And he’d want to use some of the money to set up an after-school club to teach kids about sport. Teaching’s always been his main passion in life and he’d want to carry that on.”

Love Island continues every night at 9pm on ITV2.
