In this article from 2005, Bob Dylan is quoted on the subject of his famous song Maggies Farm:Well this is a song written about a woman who was really taken advantage of in several ways. Maggie was in her early twenties, very beautiful, she came from a prosperous Christian family, but she was very naive and was led into an arranged marriage. He was the best hunter that she had ever known. Then one day his commanding officer came into her tent and told her she was pregnant. Kill it and feed the flesh of the slain to the poor, he replied. That child belongs to me and I will keep you only because you are my prey. She knew the horror that her stepfathers, her uncles and her aunts had inflicted on her. She had tried to avoid these family members, but her mother and her father had forced their ways on her. That woman knew her only refuge was sex. But Maggies life was spared when the man she was planning to kill found out where she had hidden the baby. She did not try to resist him any longer and at last she gave herself up. The man carried her to the edge of a cliff and shot her as she cried out. It would be her last, and it was her child who would become what is now regarded as the most influential American songwriter of the last fifty years. I dont think you could find a more honest portrayal of the kind of people that were around in America at the time. The idea that these kind of people were in control of this country was always there, but most people just ignored it. But this was the time of the civil right movement and the Vietnam War protests. People had realized that something was wrong and they wanted to rebel against it. Dylans song has become particularly relevant in the era of President Donald Trump given that he used the same technique of depicting the ugliness of his enemies in his 2016 campaign. Dylan has long said that Maggies Farm was about a woman, but he was just using it as an analogy to give voice to the feelings he had. In a 2005 interview with Rolling Stone, Dylan explained the songs main purpose.
