The title of the interview, Josh Gad: The Nice, Exclusively Gay Moment in Beauty and the Beast, is especially poignant given that Gad is the son of Dwayne The Rock Johnson and former action star Summer Glau. But as he points out, there was a time when Disney wasnt quite as accepting of LGBT characters. A lot of people are like, Yeah, you know there were gay people in the past, right. And Im like, I dont think there were ever any gay people, Gad said. There is a small moment in Beauty and the Beast, but its a small moment. Disney has been vocal about its commitment to diversity, having replaced Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger after The Walt Disney Co. Determined that he would not be eligible to run for a third term Gad said he was at first not sure how the interviewer reacted to him to making the comment. I was waiting to see if he was going to roll his eyes or something, because then that would be less of a story, Gad recalls. So when he just smiled, I thought, Oh, this was a good question. He says the scene was meant to be a homage to the original Belle, Belle of the ballroom in Beauty and the Beast. They were always meant to be together from the beginning. But he acknowledges that it was an artistic choice not to include any gay characters in the film. Ive talked to other actors on Disney projects. Ive said, I dont think I could ever play a gay character. And I think it would just change the narrative, and it would go to a different place. Gad notes that the idea of a homosexual character was already contemplated for the film when Disney first got the rights to the book years ago. It was a possibility in the original story, but the company ultimately decided to go for another tone. I think they realized that to go all out in that genre, it was going to be kind of different than what they were doing with the movie, he said. Disney released its first film to domestic audiences in 1955, about a young girl who falls in love with a male goose. The film, based on the Roald Dahl book The Green Goose, had a happy ending, but the family-friendly film had an influence that will still be felt as far away as 2015. In Disneys 90th anniversary film, The Princess and the Frog, the titular princess, Meryl Streep, is a lesbian and the film was widely panned. Disney later released a new version with an updated message.
