Ellie Goulding defends Tom Grennan after backlash over his on-stage comment at Brits

Ellie Goulding has defended fellow artist Tom Grennan after he made a comment about her breasts during the Brit Awards.

Ellie, whose outfit was dubbed “edgy”, attended the Brit Awards on Saturday, where she was pictured wearing a black breastplate and intense makeup in quite the departure from what fans are usually used to.

The musicians took to the stage to present the award for Best Newcomer, which Wet Leg secured, at which point Tom said: “I love what you’re doing. These are your real boobs?”

"No these are not. Mine are a lot further apart sadly. I wish,” Ellie, 36, replied, to which Tom responded with an awkward: “Sorry."

While Ellie didn’t seem to respond negatively to the comment, many fans took to social media to slam the Remind Me singer.

"Tom Grennan casually verbally harassing Ellie Goulding on stage at the Brits with that "are those your actual breasts" comment and getting way with it is not a good look in 2023, lads," one person wrote.

A second said: "Tom Grennan thinking it was appropriate to ask Ellie Goulding if they were her real boobs, on the Brits stage, just gave me the quickest ick in a while. Like instantaneous sick in my mouth."

After seeing the backlash Tom’s words caused, Ellie took to Twitter and penned: “A word on Brit/ t*t gate … I was wearing a beautiful breastplate, thank you all for appreciating it. My friend Tom Grennan is 100% an ally and we were having a bit of fun.

“No offence taken, no harm intended- and no other interpretations necessary.”

Further sharing a picture of herself alongside her co-host, Ellie added: “Such a great time with this gentleman this evening. Thanks for being a great co-host and congrats to Wet Leg.”

Tom, 27, also addressed the controversy himself and blamed the awkward words on nerves.

He said: “What started as a joke between Ellie and I before we went on stage came out all wrong.'

“The nerves got the better of us, but that does not excuse what was said, and I sincerely apologise to anyone who was offended – that’s not me at all, and I am sorry.”

Elsewhere during the Brits, Harry Styles predictably walked away with four awards while also thanking his former One Direction bandmates.

Viewers were also massive fans of the show’s host, Mo Gilligan, though some took issue with Becky Hill and rapper Aitch swearing during their acceptance speech.

Emily Atack and Lucien Laviscount were also pictured sharing a hug, and Kate Ferdinand was snapped rocking her blossoming baby bump.
