The man was running for president of the United States before the rest of us. He hits all of your favorite targets. But there is one issue on which he has not used his verbal weapons. So far he hasnt said a word against Chinese currency manipulation. Trump has consistently criticized the Chinese on trade, but he hasnt said one word against their exchange rate policy that has kept their currency artificially low. That may be what you want, and the reason Im writing this column is because I want you to know what a mistake youve made so far. Chinas currency policy is so effective because it is a government intervention. It is a policy that is directed toward the benefit of the Chinese government, not the benefit of the Chinese people. This government intervention is in contrast to the free-market economic system that Donald Trump supports. The Chinese government makes sure that the wages of their labor force are artificially low. Thats whats keeping the Chinese currency artificially low. You may say that its the Chinese people who are benefiting, but in fact, the Chinese people who work in your factories and in your stores are really struggling. So its not really your Chinese employees who are benefiting, more your customers who are suffering. Then there is the problem of what Trump calls currency manipulation. By way of example, if you look at the exchange rate between the yuan and the euro. The Chinese government is manipulating the price of a euro against the yuan, so youd pay dollars for the euro, youd pay euros for the dollars. Thats a form of currency manipulation because youre using your currency to price goods and services that are priced in dollars. So the Chinese government is deliberately keeping the yuan down so that if you bring a suitcase full of dollars into Hong Kong, you pay more for the euro than Hong Kong taxpayers would be willing to pay for the euro.
