Wes Prang Said: Caveat Emptor - Let the vendee beware! Jul. 27th 2010
On paper, this looks same a GREAT computer. Fast, HUGE hornlike drive, nice turn of RAM, DVD Burner. At an dumbfounding price.
There's a think it's so cheap. It almost never plays DVD's. And it's filled with affordable components.
Mine dropped departed after a plain 14 months. They told me it would cost more to mend than the machine is worth. Now I'm using an even cheaper computer I'm VERY poor, which is why I bought this one in the first place until I spend up my money to hit one custom shapely for me.
And that's what I recommend everyone else do. Don't buy this computer. Go to a computer bushel shop, tell them what you ingest a machine for, and let them build digit for you, to your specifications.
This machine looks like a GREAT deal. It's not. It's JUNK!
Suzanne L. Smith Said: Good computer Jun. 2nd 2010
This has been a good refurbished machine so far. It came with a DVD drive that did not function. We utilised digit of our profession grouping to fix it - it was unplugged/unconnected exclusive the computer, for whatever reason. Otherwise, we change we received good continuance in this purchase.
Krystof Said: It's now 2010 and threefold set 4gb RAM haw be peak requirements by 2015 May. 3rd 2010
I've seen newborn quad-cores at Staples for 500 and mailorder is always chancey but this 300 Optimus is worth considering for these reasons:
1. "If" Microsoft were creating rational new OS's and "then" more code makers would be bothering to ready up with the stylish OS and "then" I would not be suggesting a used machine for more than half the price of a newborn computer--but that's not the artefact things are.
2. Even though there are substantial complaints bringing the cipher judgement of this Dell Optimus downbound to 3 stars, please note that the vast eld give an expressed 5 stars.
3. Many of the complaints seem to be most under-performing graphics. Well maybe so. I don't do much graphics. But my unit, at least, did allow monitor turning recording card, which in my world is as "advanced" for graphics as I could desire.
If this feature appeals to you, then I declare you telephone A Computer for Everybody to make trusty yours module have it. If so, it is finished by a right-click to the desktop--Graphics Options--Rotation. However I declare to refrain rotating a widescreen guardian sideways--resulting in a "very tall" monitor--which is somehow disrespectful to the eyes, in my experience.
4. Sure with some mailorder computer, new or used, you must trust the vender and be prepared to convey it if not working. Currently the seller is A Computer for Everybody who seems to be a field contestant with their possess website and that specializes in the Dell Optimus. Some reviewers here complain most slummy response to complaints but others inform no problem with returns. If by chance they misinform about a defrayal then you crapper also kvetch to Amazon.
5. I am not an expert, meet my opinion, but the way things go historically, by 2015 you haw feel having some machine that has less than dual core and 4gb ram.
I am not gungho on used computers. For most grouping I would declare a new 500 sib set at Staples or Best Buy. You probably crapper modify recap to XP if you like.
But "if" you want a utilised computer, and don't need fancy graphics, seems to me this is the one to try.
This utilised Optimus is especially attractive for grouping who still hit a workable direct machine and requirement a second computer. This was my situation. I wanted a secondary machine which had the same XP OS as my older computer. My choices were a new computer for 500 or a utilised single-core computer just same my old digit for 200 or this one for 300. This has worked out meliorate than due and is twice as coercive as my direct computer.
By the way, in housing you don't know, "dual core" is supposedly like stringing up 2 computers to threefold the speed. So 3ghz with threefold set is like 6ghz. "Hyperthreading" supposedly adds yet another unit. So supposedly, this Optimus is like having a 9ghz processor. Or at least that's what I hit heard from my friends.
Also, a little history we all know. A few eld ago, 500mb RAM was superior and 1 gb RAM was fantastic. Today, I have upgraded my direct machine to its maximum of 2 gb RAM and ofttimes it is just effort by. So, if buying some kind of computer today, don't settle for anything inferior than threefold core 4 gb RAM. Then and exclusive then, in my lowercase opinion, do you have a good quantity to find it blithely usable for ten eld or maybe more.
P.S.
--Yes, of course, the liberated keyboard, liberated speakers and liberated pussyfoot are as cheesy as they come.
--Some reviewers say their Optimus is terribly slow. Maybe they got a lemon. But if this happens to you, before giving up, at small try defragmenting the hard drive.
--My standard advice. Any time you buy any computer, newborn or used, as presently as you watch that it entireness acceptably, clone the hard drive! Ultimate protection from viruses or fleshly breakdown. Maxtor/Seagate provides a free DOS program that will create a bootable clone. Then to be sure, use the double not the original. I am ease working discover the details. I cloned my main computer using the Maxtor "maxblast" non-DOS. The double entireness fine eliminate I must press F1 with apiece startup. Supposedly the DOS version does not have this shortcoming. You can also verify it to Staples to clone for 100 nonnegative the cost of the newborn drive.
This also strength hold a anxiety of the reviewer meet before me, who seems to undergo something, and who says, "...the hornlike drives in most Dell machines I hit utilised are cheap, unsafe and need constant maintenance..."
--By the way, the current prizewinning continuance in drives seems to be the Seagate 500 gb 1/2 terrabyte for about 55 at Amazon. Smaller ones aren't much cheaper, and anything bigger is twice as pricey and more likely to hit problems. Also 500 gb is probable to be plentitude of expanse for plenty of years, in my lowercase opinion.
